The Venice Oceanarium is organizing a Grunion party tonight at 11 pm at the Venice Breakwater (head to the end of Windward Avenue). Grunions are sardine-sized fish found only off the coast of California and Baja California. During grunion season, which peaks from March – June, grunions arrive at beaches en masse, 2 to 6 nights after the full and new moon, to spawn. These grunion make tasty snacks for birds and sharks, which are known to hang out at the beach during the grunion runs. If you’re a human, fishing is only allowed by hand. (This is not grunion fishing season by the way, so you’ll have to wait another night for fresh grilled grunion.) A grunion run is one of those things that I’ve always heard about, but never actually seen – like wildflowers in Death Valley or the meteor showers that I always seem to miss. Interestingly, grunions have made an appearance in both the Beverly Hillbillies and Beverly Hills, 90210. I will post photos if I finally make it this year.
