The day after Halloween, we headed up to Mammoth to check out a new (for us) bouldering area called Way Lake. It’s a warm weather spot, located at 9,000 ft. From the parking lot, we hiked uphill along an icy stream before taking a “short cut” off-trail up an extremely steep slope. Lacking a guide, and with only a handful of youtube videos as reference points, we managed to find a grouping of chalk-marked rocks. The rock itself is a beautiful black, schistic gneiss. On the problems we tried, however, the rock was pretty crumbly. I suspect we didn’t find the motherload of problems. This is a picture of Michelle, warming up on a striking slice of Way Lake rock.
